Turkey heads for snap election
August 19, 2015 - Turkey’s Prime Minister ended attempts to form a coalition government, handing the mandate back to President Tayyip Erdogan and pushing the country closer to fresh elections.
Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was given a mandate to form a government by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on July 9 as no party won a simple majority in the June 7 election.
Davutoglu’s AK Party began talks to second-placed CHP on July 13, and after a month of negotiations, the process dissolved on August 13 without a compromise.
Anadolu Agency reports that Davutoglu then sought out the MHP but the talks proved short-lived after the leaders announced there was no agreement following a two-hour meeting.
Any new poll is likely to take place in late November, although Turkey's Supreme Election Board (YSK) can hold polls in 45 days in case of an early election call.
