Mass migration by the numbers
August 14, 2015 - More than 5.7 million people have moved to the UK since 2005 -- equivalent to 66% of the population of London, Europe’s largest city. Only Germany received more migrants over a decade-long period. Overall, some 33.9 million people have moved to the EU in the past decade.

At the end of 2014, Europe hosted 3.1 million refugees or 22% of the 14.1 million refugees worldwide, according to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. This figure was around 2.7 million more (+23%) than at the end of 2013.
It is estimated that at least 224,000 refugees have arrived in Europe since the beginning of 2015.
EU Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos has said the situation in Greece has become particularly urgent, with almost 50,000 migrants arriving in July, while 35,000 arrived in Hungary in the same period.
Germany expects 450,000 to claim asylum this year, compared to 202,000 in 2014.
However, the 3.1m migrants who arrived in Europe last year represent just 0.42% of Europe’s 740m population.
