Ashraf Ghani 2014

By Chris Dinsdale

December 31, 2014 - Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai was sworn in as Afghanistan’s new president, replacing Hamid Karzai in the country’s first democratic transfer of power since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion that toppled the Taliban.

Before his return to Afghanistan in 2002, Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai worked with the World Bank. On his return he was appointed Finance Minister, attempting to secure Afghanistan’s economic recovery after the collapse of the Taliban government.

He later served as chancellor of Kabul University.

Ahmadzai won 31.5 percent of the vote in the first round of the 2014 presidential election, second to Abdullah Abdullah who secured 45 percent. In the run-off election in June, Ahmadzai won 55.27 percent of the vote, a lead of a million votes over Abdullah.
