Modern-day slavery on the rise

By Ben Mullins

December 10, 2014 - Nobel peace laureate Kailash Satyarthi has described the failure to end slavery as one of world’s biggest sins. Satyarthi, who is co-recipient of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for his work fighting child slavery in India, said it was unacceptable that almost 36 million people including about 5.5 million children are living in slavery today.

Gender equality and slavery will be in the spotlight as Malala Yousafzai becomes the youngest ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. The 17-year-old campaigner for women’s and girls' rights will receive the award, along with fellow activist Kaliash Satyarthi, at a ceremony in Oslo on December 10.
