SCOTLAND
Alex Salmond 2014
September 19, 2014 - Scotland votes on whether to leave the United Kingdom after 300 years. The results are being counted through the night. Scotland’s First Minister and leader of the Scottish National Party, Alex Salmond is head of the “Yes” campaign in the Scottish referendum. Voters will be asked: “Should Scotland be an independent country?” A proposed date for separation, ending the 300-year-old Union, is March 24, 2016.
British Prime Minister David Cameron, his Liberal Democrat deputy Nick Clegg and Labour leader Ed Miliband are united under the banner “Better Together” and have promised increased powers to the Scottish Parliament in the event of a “No” vote. Salmond has dismissed this as a “last minute desperate offer of nothing”.
