WWI CENTENARY

War timeline

By Ninian Carter

July 28, 2014 - Centenary of the end of the First World War – a conflict triggered by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914. The conflict was centred in Europe but spread to encompass much of the globe over the four years until the guns eventually fell silent on November 11, 1918.

In 1914, European nations were linked by a series of diplomatic alliances:Germany/Austria-Hungary/Ottoman Empire form the Central Powers. Britain/France/Russia make up the Triple Entente or Allies. Italy, seeking to gain Austrian territory, enters the war on the side of the Allies in May 1915. Bulgaria, with territorial ambitions in Serbia, aligns with the Central Powers in October 1915.
