Japan 2011 quake largest recorded fault slip

December 6, 2013 - Scientists have discovered that the Tohoku earthquake which struck off the coast of Japan in 2011, creating a tsunami that killed more than 15,000 people, was caused by the largest fault slip ever recorded. Stress and temperature tests revealed a layer of clay may have facillitated the slip.
