December 2, 2013 - People of the Year. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, former Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires who was elected Pope following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI in February. Pope Francis, who took his papal name in honour of Saint Francis of Assisi, is the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from the Americas, and the first from the Southern Hemisphere, and in the months since his election has become noted for his humility and concern for the poor. In April 2014 he will preside over the canonisation of two of his predecessors, Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII.
