Drone strikes in Pakistan

By Duncan Mil

November 21, 2013 - A U.S. drone strike has killed at least five people in an Islamic seminary in Pakistan's north-western Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, reports say. U.S. sources say at least two of those killed were militants. Local police report that at least three rockets were fired at a madrassa in the Hangu district, killing two teachers and three students just before sunrise on Thursday.

Context: The attack comes three weeks after Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud died in a drone attack. On Wednesday, Pakistan said the U.S. had given assurances that there would be no further drone strikes while the government tried to engage in peace talks with the Taliban.

Pakistan publicly opposes U.S. drone strikes, saying they kill too many civilians and violate its sovereignty, although in private officials admit the government broadly supports them.
