Miley Cyrus 2013

By Chris Dinsdale

November 23, 2013 - Miley Cyrus, American singer and actress, turns 21 on November 23. Cyrus came to fame as the wholesome child star of Disney’s “Hannah Montana”, but is now focused on music and has a huge global following, despite a series of recent exploits that have attracted widespread criticism.

Born on November 23, 1992, in Nashville, Tennessee, Miley Ray Cyrus began her career at 11 years old with "Hannah Montana", a squeaky-clean Disney television series documenting the life of an ordinary teenage girl with a secret double life as a pop superstar. Since then, Cyrus, the daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, has moved away from film and towards more adult music markets.

Her 2013 singles "We Can't Stop" and "Wrecking Ball" have scored over 500 million hits on Youtube, making Cyrus one of the most watched artists on the internet. However, a number of recent controversies, including performing a sexually-provocative "twerking" dance routine with singer Robin Thicke at the MTV Video Music Awards, have provoked a critical backlash and widespread debate around how the music industry treats young women.
