Sochi security threats

February 7, 2014 - November 23, 2013 - Moscow is to deploy 37,000 police and Interior Ministry troops, an army Spetsnaz brigade, and a heavily armoured train, in a bid to counter threats to the Winter Olympics. The Kremlin has been fighting a growing Islamist insurgency in the North Caucasus for two decades. Doku Umarov, the Al Qaeda-linked leader of the insurgency has called for attacks on Winter Olympics.
