Jesse Eisenberg 2013

By Chris Dinsdale

October 5, 2013 - U.S. actor Jesse Eisenberg turns 30. He is best known for his role as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network (2010), for which he received Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.

Jesse Eisenberg, typically assigned the role of socially awkward young man, turns 30 on October 5.

Eisenberg began his career with a series of successful independent films including Roger Dodger (2002) and The Squid and the Whale (2005), before getting his breakthrough in horror comedy Zombieland (2009). A surprise commercial success, Zombieland saw Eisenberg cast alongside Woody Harrelson as survivors of a zombie apocalypse. However, it was The Social Network (2010) that really blasted his career trajectory into orbit. As Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO and driving force behind Facebook, Eisenberg portrays an arrogant man desperately seeking social acceptance; in this he carries this off the dark irony of an entire generation brought up on social media.

Born in Queens, New York, Jesse Eisenberg may seem like an unlikely leading man. His rapid speech and unaffected appearance don't fit the mould presented to us by Hollywood stars. In Richard Ayoade's The Double (2013), based on Dostoyevsky's dystopian novel of the same name, Eisenberg is driven mad by the arrival of his doppelganger. Much like his other characters, the actor brings black humour to very serious themes, in this case self-identity. It's this understated style that has made him a fitting role model for the Facebook generation.
