Will Smith 2013
September 25, 2013 - Will Smith, highly successful U.S. actor, producer, and rapper, celebrates his 45th birthday. Smith has won four Grammy Awards and been nominated for two Academy Awards (for Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness). As of 2012, his films had grossed $6.36 billion globally.
Rapper turned Hollywood megastar, Will Smith, turns 45 on September 25. His films are amongst the highest grossing in box office history, making him one of the industry's most bankable actors. His impressive record includes performances in Men in Black (1997), Enemy of the State (1998) and I Am Legend (2007). Between blockbuster hits Smith has managed to garner critical acclaim with Oscar nominations for Best Actor in Ali (2001) and The Pursuit of Happyness (2006). Recently, his dominating presence at the box office has faltered with the unsuccessful outing After Earth, which co-starred his son Jaden Smith.
Born and raised in West Philadelphia, Will Smith began his career as a rapper with DJ Jazzy Jeff. As The Fresh Prince in the hip-hop duo, his lyrics were refreshingly clean and easy-going. Charismatic and funny, Smith made the career transition to television in the early 1990s with the enduringly popular Fresh Prince of Bel-Air sitcom. Determined to become "the biggest movie star in the world", he then made the move to Hollywood feature films. Many successful musicians have attempted the crossover to acting, with little success; Will Smith is the great exception to this rule.
