Record opium crop infographic
Afghanistan's record opium crop, expected to reach 8,200 tonnes this year, clearly displays the sharp divide between the relatively stable north and centre of the country and the provinces of the south where Taliban insurgents -- in control of vast swathes of territory -- have encouraged opium production to soar. Graphic shows how opium eradiction progamme in Afghanistan is being undermined by the security situation and the war with the Taliban.
