EU picks green lighting

March 13, 2007 - Incandescent light bulbs will be switched off in Europe by 2009 in a shift from traditional light bulbs to energy-efficient lamps. The move follows similar plans in the U.S. states of California and New Jersey, as well as Australia, New Zealand, Venezuela and Cuba. There are 3.6bn incandescent bulbs currently in use in the 27-member EU. LED bulbs could cut energy use by half, saving about 23 megatonnes of CO2 or an annual cost saving of 7bn EUR.2.1bn $9.2bn, £4.8bn
