Shuttle returns to flight picture

May 15, 2005 - The space shuttle Discovery is set to return to flight. Picture shows new cockpit, in which 11 new full-colour, flat-panel display screens replace 32 gauges and electromechanical displays and four cathode-ray tube displays. The new "smart glass cockpit" is 75 pounds 34kg) lighter and uses less power than before, and its colour displays reduce the pilot's workload during critical periods and provide easier pilot recognition of key functions.
