By Ninian Carter

Hurricane Beryl, the earliest known Category 4 hurricane on record, has barrelled across the Atlantic Ocean and is on course to bring life-threatening winds and flash flooding to the islands of the Caribbean.

The National Hurricane Center describes Beryl as “extremely dangerous”, with warnings issued to Barbados, St. Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Tobago, Dominica, Trinidad, the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

It’s rare for a major hurricane to appear this early in the Atlantic hurricane season – June 1 to November 30 – with Beryl beating Hurricane Dennis, which became a Category 4 storm on July 8, 2005.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts above-average hurricane activity in the Atlantic this year, due in part to warming ocean temperatures caused by climate change.
