Dengue cases have been rapidly rising across Europe, with some infections turning potentially severe, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has warned.
In 2023, there were 130 locally acquired cases of dengue reported in the EU/EEA, and 71 cases were reported in 2022. This is a significant increase compared to the ten-year period 2010-2021, where the total number of locally acquired cases was 73 for the whole period,
It has become established in Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia and Spain, according to the ECDC.
It has also been recorded in Belgium, Cyprus, Czechia, the Netherlands and Slovakia.
The rise in dengue cases is not the only concern. Experts warn that conditions might also lead to an increase in malaria incidents in the future.
