Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has been shot and seriously injured – one of several high-profile European leader to be the target of an assassination attempt in the past 50 years.

Local news reports say a motive is unclear, but the shooter, a 71-year-old male, is in custody.

Assassination attempts on leaders in Europe are fairly infrequent, but a number of prominent European politicians have been targets of attacks.
