Europa Parlament Wahlen 2024

By Duncan Mil

May 13, 2024 - Bis zu 450 Millionen Bürger der 27 Mitgliedstaaten in der Europäischen Union wählen vom 6.-9. Juni die 620 Mitglieder im Europa Parlament, eine der drei Kerninstitutionen der Union.

Ahead of the European Parliament elections, Germany has lowered the age limit on participation to 16 -- allowing around 4.8 million young Germans to vote for the first time.

This change makes Germany the largest of just five states in the EU to allow people under 18 to vote. Austria, Belgium, and Malta have already enfranchised 16- and 17-year-olds and Greece will allow anyone turning 17 in 2024 to participate in the ballot.

However, the political landscape has challenges. Younger German voters, in particular, are being heavily courted by the far right, especially the Alternative für Deutschland party (AfD). This party, which leans towards hard Euroscepticism, right-wing populism, and even extremism, could potentially reshape the political discourse in the EU.

Support for far-right and conservative parties also appears unrestrained in Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, according to a Euronews survey of 26,000 interviews.

Italy’s right-wing Brothers of Italy could leap from its current seven parliamentary seats to 23, showcasing the dynamic nature of the political landscape.

Moreover, three parties affiliated with the far-right Identity and Democracy (ID) parliamentary group are leading polls in France, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
