Stärkstes Hochwasser in 80 Jahren in Russland und Kasachstan Kazakhstan

By Phil Bainbridge

Town and cities in Kazakhstan and the Ural, Siberia and Volga regions of Russia were overwhelmed as water levels reached over 10m, well above the 9.3m danger level. Over 96,000 people in Kazakhstan and over 12,000 in Russia were ordered to evacuate, with peak levels expected to be reached in three to five days in many places, and flooding expected to continue until the end of April.

While spring flooding is a usual occurrence at this time of year, Russian officials said the soil, which was already waterlogged before winter, froze amid high snow fall in the mountains which then melted quickly in swiftly-rising spring temperatures and heavy rains.
