EU neues Hilfspaket für die Ukraine

By Duncan Mil

January 29, 2024 - Europäische Staatschefs konnten ein €50 Milliarden Hilfspaket für die Ukraine schnüren, nachdem Ungarn seinen Widerstand aufgegeben hat.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has recently urged allies to provide more funding and said that a failure to do so would threaten Western security.

“If all countries put in 1% of GDP, I would say the job would be done,” Latvian Foreign Minister Krisjanis Karins told reporters on Monday.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been a vocal critic of the EU’s financial and military support for Kyiv and has maintained close ties with the Kremlin since Russia’s invasion of neighbouring Ukraine in February 2022.

The Financial Times reported on Sunday that the EU would sabotage Hungary’s economy if Budapest blocked aid at an emergency summit on Thursday (February 1).

Urban has signalled his readiness for a compromise allowing Ukraine’s proposed European Union aid package.
