Dec 2, Greece: Maria Callas, one of the greatest ever opera voices, was born to Greek parents in New York City 100 years ago. Centenary honours include the new Maria Callas Museum in Athens and the upcoming movie Maria, with Angelina Jolie.

Dec 6-7, U.S.: Washington hosts a joint military industry conference with Ukraine as Kyiv ramps up efforts to produce its own weapons, amid concerns that supplies from the West might be faltering as the Israel-Hamas war diverts attention.

Dec 7-8, China: The European Commission and Council presidents, Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel, travel to Beijing for the first
in-person summit with Chinese leaders in four years amid heightened geopolitical tensions.

Dec 8, UK: Fans of the Roald Dahl classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will flock to Wonka, a new film exploring the early years of eccentric chocolate-maker Willy Wonka, played by Timothée Chalamet.

Dec 10, Argentina: Far-right libertarian Javier Milei is sworn in as president, a major change for a country battling with inflation nearing 150%, two-fifths of the population in poverty and a looming recession.

Dec 15, Mexico: The first section of the 1,525km Tren Maya, a railway line set to encircling the Yucatan, is set to open, connecting the city of Campeche to Cancun. The entire track is expected to be ready by Feb 2024.

Dec 20, D.R. Congo: President Felix Tshisekedi, who has been running the vast country of nearly 100 million people since 2019, faces off against more than two dozen rivals in presidential elections.

Dec 24, U.S.: The debut flight of the Vulcan Centaur rocket, the successor to the Atlas V and Delta IV vehicles, will carry the inaugural flight of the Peregrine Lunar Lander, designed to deliver payloads to the moon for NASA and commercial companies.
