U.S. China Gespräche unter schwierigen Umständen
November 14, 2023 - Präsident Joe Biden und sein chinesischer Gegenspieler, Xi Jinping, sind zu einem Treffen am APEC Gipfel in San Francisco bereit, Themen der Gespräche sind Handel, Taiwan und Bewältigung der angespannten Beziehung zwischen US und China.
At the top of this year’s agenda is the $760 billion in trade between the two countries -- a complicated economic relationship strained by tariffs, trade wars, security breaches, and the shooting down of a spy balloon in February, plunging their diplomacy into crisis.
Polling by the Economist and YouGov following the balloon incident found that more than four in ten Americans (43%) consider China an “enemy” of the U.S.
Biden and Xi also seek a degree of what’s being called “tactical stabilisation”- a pause in deterioration that will allow each to pursue its interests in a more predictable environment.
There is also a hope that military-to-military talks might be able to restart after being shut down following former Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s controversial visit to Taiwan last year.
The two leaders will likely discuss the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. In both cases, China has criticised the U.S. for its support for both Israel and Ukraine and for supply of military assistance.
