Vorgezogene Neuwahlen in den Niederlanden

By Duncan Mil

Rutte’s liberal People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) is now led by Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius, 46. As justice minister since January 2022, she has taken a hard line on immigration despite arriving as a child refugee from Turkey.

When Rutte’s government fell in the row over immigration, Yeşilgöz-Zegerius said family reunification should be restricted, arguing for limits on family reunions for asylum seekers.

The recently formed New Social Contract (NSC) party leads in polls. The NSC, led by former Christian Democrat MP Pieter Omtzigt, wants to set a “guideline” ceiling of 50,000 migrants a year allowed into the Netherlands -- including asylum seekers, labour migrants and students. International students make up some 40% of Dutch university enrollments.

In late August, former European climate commissioner Frans Timmermans became leader of a combined Green-Labour alliance (GL/PvdA). Timmermans championed the EU’s “green deal” to cut carbon emissions and wants to reduce Dutch greenhouse gas emissions by 65% by 2030.

Trailing the three main parties is anti-Islam lawmaker Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party, which advocates a halt in asylum seekers and opting out of EU and United Nations agreements and treaties on refugees and asylum.
