Im August wird es großangelegte Militärübungen von US und Südkorea geben, Präsidentenwahlen in Kenia, 75 Jahre Unabhängigkeit Indiens von britischer Herrschaft und Gründung von Pakistan - und mehr.

Aug 2, U.S.: South Korea’s first mission to the moon blasts off from Florida. The Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (Danuri) will conduct scientific investigations and identify potential landing sites for future missions.

Aug 5-28, Scotland: An explosion of creative energy from around the globe lights up the Edinburgh International Festival and its famous offshoot, the Fringe, back at full strength for the first time since 2019.

Aug 7, Colombia: Former guerrilla fighter Gustavo Petro is sworn in as president, making him the country’s first leftist head of state.

Aug 9, Kenya: Deputy President William Ruto is making his first bid for the top office. He faces veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, who at age 77 is staging his fourth presidential run.

Aug 14-15, Pakistan, India: 75 years ago Pakistan came into existence and India gained independence from British rule.

Aug 22-Sep 1, Korea: The U.S. and South Korea resume large-scale military exercises in the wake of growing threats from North Korea. The drills were suspended for four years in a bid to negotiate Pyongyang away from its nuclear weapons.

Aug 31, France: Diana, Princess of Wales was killed in a car crash in Paris 25 years ago.

August, India: Eight cheetahs arrive from Namibia as part of independence anniversary celebrations. India’s indigenous cheetahs became extinct in 1952.
