Saied's opponents fear the changes will deal a major blow to democracy in Tunisia, widely seen as the only success story of the “Arab Spring” uprisings against autocratic rule that elsewhere ended in renewed repression and civil wars, Reuters said.

Voters in Tunisia's referendum on Monday backed the new constitution giving Saied greater powers, with 92.3% voting "yes," according to a Sigma Conseil exit poll issued by state TV. Shortly after the exit poll was released, Tunisia's Electoral Commission confirmed the turnout was just 27.54% after opposition parties boycotted the ballot in protest, Deutsche Welle said.
