Macron trifft auf linken Herausforderer

By Duncan Mil

Far-left Jean-Luc Mélenchon has taken advantage of public disillusionment with traditional politics and his strong performance in April’s presidential election to forge a far-left alliance that could win a large share of seats in this month’s National Assembly elections.

Macron needs to win a majority in the lower house of parliament on the June 12 and 19 ballots to implement his reform plan to move France to full employment and strengthen its economy, including pushing back the official retirement age from 62 to 65.

Nupes comprises five parties including Mélenchon’s La France Insoumise (France Unbowed) as well as the Socialists, Communists and Greens.

Nupes’ manifesto includes:
Raising the minimum wage.
Lowering the retirement age to 60.
Freezing the prices of essential goods.
Investing “massively” in renewable energy and reintroducing the wealth tax.

Polls suggest Macron’s Ensemble! alliance is neck and neck with the Mélenchon-led Nupes alliance.

Politico’s latest Poll of Polls put the two alliances at 26% each and suggests Macron’s alliance could win between 275-318 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly. For an absolute majority, he needs 289 seats.

According to a poll by the Ifop institute for broadcaster LCI, Macron’s newly-branded Renaissance party and allies could win as few as 250-290 seats. Last week Ifop saw Macron’s party and its partners winning 275-310 seats.

A Harris Interactive-Toluna poll for Challenges magazine on June 7 had a more optimistic forecast of 285-335 seats for Macron’s alliance.
