US Tötungsdelikte mit Feuerwaffen stiegen rasant im ersten Jahr der Pandemie

By Ninian Carter

May 11, 2022 - In US stieg 2020 die Zahl der Erschiessungen um 35%, das höchste Niveau seit 1994 – es zeigte sich auch, dass Schüsse vor allem für junge, schwarze Männer tödlich waren.

A new report published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) makes for sobering reading.

It shows African Americans are at least four times more likely to be killed by a gun than the overall population, and 12 times more likely than a white person.

Increased gun violence linked to the coronavirus pandemic, which reached the United States in January 2020, has been reported before, but the CDC assessment goes further.

The firearm homicide rate, measured per 100,000 people, rose from 4.6 in 2019 to 6.1 in 2020 – a leap of 34.6%. The actual numbers are 14,392 homicides in 2019, and 19,350 in 2020.

Among African Americans, the rate was 26.6 deaths per 100,000 – a 39.5% increase over 2019.

For white Americans, the rate was 2.2 per 100,000 – still a sizeable rise of 28.4% on the previous year.
