The 11-member board of social media platform Twitter says it has accepted a $44 billion offer from SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk to purchase the company and take it private.
Musk, who made the surprise bid less than two weeks ago, believes Twitter has “tremendous potential” that he can unlock. He says of the platform, “Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated”.
The world’s richest person is also calling for a series of changes that will relax content restrictions and close down fake accounts.
The board initially refused Musk’s bid, but in a change of tune late Monday, will now advise shareholders to vote to approve the deal.
According to Forbes, Musk is worth $273.6bn – largely earned from his shareholding in electric vehicle maker Tesla.
