LEGOs investiert in neue Technologie für seine Plastikbausteine

By Ninian Carter

June 25, 2021 - LEGO stellt eine Entwicklung vor, mit der man die berühmten Bausteine aus recycelten Wasserflaschen zukünftig auch in neuen Baukastenreihen finden wird.

LEGO plans to begin selling toy building bricks made from recycled plastic bottles by 2023, it has announced ahead of its first LEGO CON online streaming event on June 26.

For the past six years, the Danish toy making giant has put to work almost 150 engineers and scientists, testing many different plant-based and recycled materials.

In 2020 it pledged $400m over three years to step up efforts to replace plastic bricks with ones made from sustainable materials by the end of the decade.

That investment and effort appears to have borne fruit early, with the company excitedly sharing news of a breakthrough that allows it to turn plastic water bottles into 2x4 LEGO bricks. It hopes to have the method finalised to sell kits which include recycled materials in the next 18 to 24 months.

LEGO, which uses 100,000 tonnes of plastic in its products each year, says it will use recycled material from plastic bottles that are certified as safe to handle beverages in Europe and the United States.

A one-litre plastic water bottle can yield around ten 2x4 bricks.
