The first global study of its kind showed that long working hours led to 745,000 deaths from stroke and heart disease in 2016 – an increase of nearly 30 percent from 2000.

People in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific region were the most affected. The WHO also said the trend may worsen due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The study, conducted with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), showed almost three quarters of those that died were men.
