Sozialisten erwarten hohen Sieg in Bolivien

By Jordi Bou

October 19, 2020 - Boliviens Sozialisten erwarten Rückkehr an die Macht, nachdem Umfragen zeigten, dass sie auf bestem Weg zu einer Mehrheit bei der Präsidentenwahl sind.

The quick-count from pollster Ciesmori, released by Bolivian TV channel Unitel early Monday, showed socialist candidate Luis Arce had 52.4% of valid votes, more than 20 percentage points above the second place centrist rival Carlos Mesa, who had 31.5%.

Exit polls carried out by the Jubileo research institution gave Arce of the Mas party 53% of the votes, followed by Mesa of the Citizens' Community alliance with 30.8%.

In order to win outright in the first round, a candidate needs to obtain 40% of the vote and have a 10-percentage-point lead over his nearest rival.

Sunday’s poll is regarded as a test of democracy in the Andean nation after last year’s election was annulled after allegations of vote rigging, which sparked bloody protests and led to Morales quitting after almost 14 years in power.
