A leaked report suggests HS2 – Europe’s largest infrastructure project – could cost almost double the £56 billion ($73 billion) predicted in 2015, according to the BBC.
Some £8 billion ($10.4 billion) has already been spent on the project, which will connect London, the Midlands and northern England using trains capable of travelling at 250mph (400km/h).
The first phase of the project, between London and Birmingham, is due to open at the end of 2026, with the second phase to Leeds and Manchester expected to be completed by 2032-33.
