Authorities in the surrounding province, Batangas, have declared a “state of calamity”, signifying major disruption.
More than 16,000 people were evacuated from the volcanic island and the area immediately around it - normally a popular tourist spot. Dozens of tremors set residents on edge.
Schools and businesses have shut across the capital, Manila, as clouds of volcanic ash have engulfed the city. Several flights have been suspended at Manila International Airport.
Taal volcano, the country’s second most active volcano, has erupted more than 30 times in the past 500 years, most recently in 1977. An eruption in 1911 killed around 1,500 people.
