Historische Brexit Abstimmung

Britain’s House of Commons is to vote on the Withdrawal Agreement -- the terms on which the UK will leave the European Union -- with Prime Minister Theresa May needing support from Labour rebels to win parliamentary approval.

The minority government of the Conservative Party and the main opposition party, Labour, are internally divided on how Brexit should proceed.

The deal stipulates that following Britain’s exit from the union on March 29 there will be a 21-month transition period, during which the UK will remain in the EU single market.

Hardliners, wanting a clean break with Brussels, have warned that failure to keep the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland open will trap Britain in a customs union from which it cannot withdraw.

Supporters of a “soft Brexit” reject the deal, saying it fails to secure the closest possible political and trade ties with the EU.

Some MP’s from both parties think that the country should hold a second referendum on Brexit.

The House of Commons will vote on May’s deal on December 11.
