Sexual violence is difficult to measure, and there is no single source of data that provides a complete picture of the crime. U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) data shows that just 310 out of every 1,000 sexual assaults are reported to the police, meaning two out of every three incidents go unreported.

A Stop Street Harassment survey found that 81 per cent of American women had experienced some form of sexual harassment during their lifetime.

UN Women estimates that 35 per cent of women globally are victims of physical or sexual violence. This rises to 71 per cent in India and 87 per cent in Vietnam.

In the Arab world 37 per cent of women have experienced sexual harassment, while in South Africa, almost three-in-four women suffered abuse.

In the European Union, a 2012 survey found rates of physical and sexual violence ranged from 20 per cent in Spain and Poland to 35 per cent in Germany, 44 per cent in the UK, peaking at 52 per cent in Denmark.

It seems the safest place for women is Australia where its national statistics bureau estimates just 17 per cent of women suffering physical or sexual violence.
