July 28, 2014 - The First World War broke out, triggered by the assassination in Sarajevo of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary the previous month. The conflict was centred in Europe but spread to encompass much of the globe over the four years until the guns eventually fell silent on November 11, 1918.
