September 20 - November 2, 2019 -- The Rugby World Cup takes place in Japan, with 20 teams competing to be crowned World Champions. The 2019 tournament marks the first time that the showpiece has been held in Asia, outside rugby's traditional heartlands.
Host nation Japan will open the tournament against Russia in Tokyo on September 20. Reigning champions New Zealand begin their campaign with a heavyweight clash against South Africa, 2015 finalists Australia face Fiji, while France and Argentina kick off Pool C -- which also includes England -- with a highly anticipated contest.
New Zealand are aiming to lift the Webb Ellis Cup for a record-extending fourth time after their triumph in 2015. That victory moved them ahead of their southern hemisphere rivals Australia and South Africa, who have each won the tournament twice.
A total of 48 matches will be played at 12 venues over six weeks, with the final taking place at Nissan Stadium in Yokohama on November 2.

Jul 6 CYCLING: Tour de France 2019 route (Graphic)
July 6-28, 2019 -- The route of the 2019 Tour de France will feature 30 categorised climbs, five mountain finishes in what the organisers are promising will be “the highest Tour in history”, and which they have set to up encourage breakaways and attacks. The total race distance is 3,460km, with the Grand Départ set for Brussels on 6 July and the finish in Paris on 28 July.
Next year's Tour de France will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the showcase race's iconic yellow jersey.
With France emerging from the carnage of World War I, the Tour offered its beacon of hope to the war-ravaged nation. In 1919, the race leader's yellow jersey — which has become cycling's most iconic symbol — was introduced.
Joining Prudhomme on stage were five-time Tour winners Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain.
Only four riders, including Jacques Anquetil, have won five Tours. Lance Armstrong was stripped of his seven titles for doping.
British rider Chris Froome will try to win his fifth title next year, but will have to depose his Team Sky teammate Geraint Thomas over the 3,460-kilometer race.
The race begins with a flat stage for sprinters around the city of Brussels and stays there the next day for the 27-kilometer team time trial.
After leaving Belgium, the Tour snakes through the Champagne and Lorraine regions. Stage 4 for sprinters starts in Reims — the Champagne-producing city where 25 French kings were crowned in its cathedral.
With the race leaving the Alsace region, Stage 7 is the longest at 230 kilometers (143 miles) and made for sprinters. The next day's stage is a hilly one, with several short but sharp climbs from Macon to Saint-Etienne.
The first rest day is July 16 in Albi in southern France, followed by a sprint stage before the Tour enters the high Pyrenees. Stage 14 on July 20 features finishes with a climb up the Tourmalet pass, one of the most famed in Tour history.
Riders tackle three days of Alpine climbing on stages 18-20, featuring an ascent up the famed Galibier and imposing Iseran — standing 2,770 meters— and culminating with a relentless 33.4-kilometer (trek up to the ski resort of Val Thorens.
After the weary peloton is flown toward Paris, the race ends the next day with its processional showcase stage on the Champs-Elysees.

Mar 17 F1: New plans for 2019 Formula 1 season (Graphic)
March 17 - December 1, 2019 -- Rule changes for 2019, laying the groundwork for wholescale changes due in 2021, make the cars look noticeably different – with aerodynamic alterations intended to improve overtaking opportunities.
New rear wing: Higher, wider, simpler wing to promote closer racing.
Height increase: 20mm
Width increase: 100mm
Larger wing creates bigger hole in air – benefits cars trying to slipstream behind.
Rear wing endplate lights: Additional LED on either side of traditional rear central light, to increase visibility of cars in poor weather. Must be illuminated when driver using intermediate or wet tyres.
DRS opening increased by 20mm Boosts potential power by 25%
New barge boards: Repositioned, smaller, less powerful and less aerodynamically disruptive.
Height reduction: 150mm
Moved forward: 100mm
Improves airflow from front wing and reduces turbulent airflow from rear of car.
New brake ducts:
Simplified design reduces complex aerodynamic features – less downforce from disturbed air means less choppy wake for cars close behind.
New front wing: As rear wing – higher, wider, simpler structure.
Width increase: 200mm
Height increase: 20mm
Moved forward: 25mm
Complex endplates that outwash airflow around front tyres, banned. Simpler design means almost full width of wing is given to generating downforce.
Stronger helmet: Vital safety benefits include advanced ballistic protection and increased energy absorption.
Front visor lowered: 10mm
To reduce risk of injury from impact debris
Shell: Advanced composite materials ensure improved resistance to crushing and penetration.
ADDITIONAL CHANGES
Biometric gloves: Sensors monitor driver’s pulse rate and blood oxygen levels in event of crash.
Increased fuel allowance: Up from 105kg to 110kg – allows engine to run at full power at all times.
Weight: Driver’s weight considered separately to car. Minimum car weight (without fuel) up from 733kg to 740kg. At least 80kg of that must be made up of driver, seat and driving equipment.
Tyre colours: Range of nine tyre colours used in 2018 are gone (fans found it hard to follow). Pirelli have cut it back to just three:
Red: Soft
Yellow: Medium
White: Hard

March 1 - December 1, 2019 -- The 16th season of the Chinese Super League begins, with Shanghai SIPG aiming to defend their title. China’s premier football competition has seen a remarkable increase in global appeal in recent seasons, with European and South American stars attracted by the lure of higher wages and superstar status.
Founded in 2004, there are currently 16 teams in the Super League. Each team has 18 players, of which up to 4 can be foreign (but only 3 of these can play in a particular match) and 3 domestic players have to be under the age of 23. Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini became the latest European-based player to complete a transfer to China when he left Manchester United to join Shandong Luneng in January.
In the opening fixtures, Shanghai SIPG kick off the new season with a clash at local rivals Shanghai Greenland Shenhua, while Guangzhou Evergrande host Tianjin Quanjian, and Shangdong take on Beijing Renhe.
Newly promoted teams Wuhan Zall and Shenzhen, both returning to the top flight after a short absence, begin their campaigns against Beijing Guoan and Hebei China Fortune respectively.

Oct 28 SKIING: Alpine World Cup 2018-19 (Graphic)
October 28, 2018 - March 17, 2019 -- The FIS Alpine Ski World Cup is the premier international circuit of alpine skiing competitions, taking place at more than 30 venues in 12 countries. The season begins in Soelden, Austria, and concludes in March at the World Cup finals in Soldeu, Andorra.
The reigning Alpine Ski World Cup overall champions are Austria’s Marcel Hirscher (men) and Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States (women).
For U.S. star Lindsey Vonn, the most successful female in alpine skiing history, the 2018-19 season will be her last winter of competition.
With 82 World Cup victories to her name, Vonn sits just four wins shy of tying Ingemar Stenmark’s all-time World Cup win record of 86 set in 1989, but insists she will retire at the end of the upcoming winter whether or not she can pass Stenmark’s tally.
She won five World Cup races in the 2017-18 season, and plans to race every downhill and super-G in the approaching season to give herself the best chance of breaking the record.

Jun 13 SOCCER: North America to host 2026 World Cup (Graphic)
June 13, 2018 -- A combined “United” bid from the United States, Canada, and Mexico has won the right to stage the biggest World Cup ever held – with 48 teams playing 80 matches over 34 days.
The United bid won with 67 percent of the vote. An optimistic promise of delivering $14 billion in revenue helped sway voters, along with the lack of major construction work required on the 16 planned stadiums, all of which already exist.
The U.S. proposed staging 60 out of the 80 games in 2026, when 16 teams will be added to the finals, leaving Canada and Mexico with ten fixtures each. The U.S. is set to host all games from the quarterfinals onward.
By contrast, a potential bid from Morocco appeared too hazardous when all 14 venues had to be built or renovated as part of a $16 billion investment in new infrastructure. The vote leaves Morocco reeling from a fifth failure in a World Cup hosting vote, with the continent’s sole tournament coming in 2010 in South Africa.
