With the IOC aiming to make the Games more youthful and urban, and to increase the number of female participants, there will be an extra 30 medal events, six new sports (including baseball and softball which are returning after a 13-year hiatus), and 15 new events within existing sports. These will include surfing, 3-on-3 basketball, freestyle BMX and Madison cycling, as well as new mixed-gender events across several sports (athletics, swimming, table tennis and triathlon).
