At stake is the future Meta’s $1.4 trillion advertising business and the possibility that its massively popular platforms could be split into separate entities – a potential corporate breakup not seen since the dismantling of AT&T’s telephone monopoly over four decades ago.

The case, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) versus Meta, was filed during U.S. President Donald Trump's first administration but risks becoming politicised during his second term.

Zuckerberg has lobbied Trump in person to have the FTC drop the case, according to the Wall Street Journal.
