President Andrzej Duda told the Financial Times that he had recently discussed the proposal with U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg.

Duda stated that the proposal would be a response to President Vladimir Putin’s 2023 decision to deploy Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, Moscow’s ally in its invasion of Ukraine.

The U.S. has long stationed approximately 100 B61 tactical nuclear bombs at six bases across five European countries. These bombs remain under American control, but the air forces of those five countries, along with Greece, practice delivering them using dual-capable (DCA) aircraft in Europe.

Five additional NATO members – the Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, and Finland – play a supporting role in NATO’s nuclear posture through the “SNOWCAT” mission (Support of Nuclear Operations With Conventional Air Tactics), alongside the DCA-contributing countries.

Polish policymakers have recently shown interest in a proposal put forward by French President Emmanuel Macron, suggesting that France’s nuclear umbrella could be extended to its European allies.

France and the United Kingdom are the only two European countries that possess nuclear weapons. Currently, France has just under 300 nuclear warheads, while the UK maintains approximately 250
