According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a deadly E. coli outbreak linked to the McDonald’s Quarter Pounder burger has killed one person and made dozens of others ill.
A child with complications from hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a condition that damages blood vessels and can cause deadly clots, and nine other people have been hospitalised in the outbreak, seemingly centred on the state of Colorado.
McDonald’s has removed the Quarter Pounder from menus in the affected areas and the slivered onions that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) believes is the root of the outbreak.
Shares in the fast-food giant fell more than 10% in post-market trading on Tuesday, before regaining some losses.
The outbreak is caused by a virulent form of the bacteria – E. coli O157:H7. Symptoms arrive three to four days after swallowing the bacteria and can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhoea and vomiting.
