October 20, 2014: Oscar de la Renta, Dominican-American fashion designer, died at age 82. He became famous in the 1960s as one of Jackie Kennedy’s favoured couturiers

October 21, 2023: Bobby Charlton, Manchester Utd legend who helped England to win the 1966 World Cup, and was widely seen as one of football’s all-time greats, died at age 86

October 22, 2004: President Saparmurat Niyazov of Turkmenistan opened a vast mosque in his birthplace, Kipchak, featuring inscriptions from his own writings as well as the Koran

October 23, 1915: Over 25,000 women marched through New York City to demand the right to vote, the largest such parade yet held. American women finally won the vote in 1920

October 24, 1929: The Wall Street Crash began as nearly 13 million shares changed hands in panic selling as prices collapsed on the New York Stock Exchange on “Black Thursday”

October 25, 1854: The abortive Charge of the Light Brigade, an attack by sabre-armed British cavalry on a Russian artillery battery in the Crimean War, ended in a massacre

October 26, 1861: The Pony Express closed. It operated for 19 months and was the most direct means of east to west communication in the U.S. before the advent of the telegraph
