Lucara found the diamond at the Karowe Mine using Mega Diamond Recovery X-ray Transmission technology, specifically designed to unearth large diamonds by analysing the stones’ shape, density and inclusions. The value of a diamond is based on the four Cs: Carat weight, Colour, Clarity and Cut; the latest find is estimated to be worth over $40 million although these parameters have still to be determined.
Botswana is becoming famous for giant stones, with seven of the ten largest stones all originating there, six alone from Lucara’s Karowe Mine. In 2015, the company found the 1,111-carat Lesedi La Rona, which sold for $53 million, and in 2019 discovered the 1,758-carat Sewelô diamond which was bought by Louis Vuitton for an undisclosed sum. The mine has also yielded a 813-carat Constellation stone that fetched a record $63 million.
The biggest gem-quality diamond ever discovered is the 3,106-carat Cullinan, found near Pretoria in South Africa in 1905. It was cut into several polished gems, the two largest of which — the Great Star of Africa and the Second Star of Africa — are set in the Crown Jewels of Britain.
