September 1, 1939: Germany invaded Poland, heralding the start of World War Two. Great Britain and France declared war on Germany two days later

September 2, -31: Augustus Caesar defeated the naval forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium, the victory making Augustus the master of the Roman world

September 3, 2004: Russia’s school hostage crisis in Beslan ended tragically when 330 people, over half of them children, died in bomb explosions or fierce gunbattles

September 4, 1964: The Forth Road Bridge in Scotland, with a centre span of 3,300ft (1,006m), was opened, connecting the capital city of Edinburgh with Fife to the north

September 5, 1698: Tsar Peter the Great of Russia imposed a tax on beards as part of an effort to modernise Russian society along western European models

September 6, 1994: It was confirmed that Anastasia, youngest daughter of Russia’s last Tsar, Nicholas II, died with her family in 1918 despite years of speculation that she survived

September 7, 1949: Mexican artist Jose Clemente Orozco died. One of the greatest mural painters of the 20th century, his works adorn many buildings in Mexico and the United States
