North Korean leader Kim presided over a Sunday ceremony for delivering the new weapons system to the military. Marked by a massive fireworks display, Kim described the new missile launchers as an “up-to-date tactical attack weapon” he had “personally designed.”
North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency said the launchers were freshly produced by the county’s munitions factories and designed to fire “tactical” ballistic missiles -- a term that describes systems capable of delivering lower-yield nuclear weapons.
Each launcher holds four short-range Hwasong-11 ballistic missiles capable of carrying 4.5-tonne warheads at a range of up to 180km.
Concerns about Kim’s nuclear programme have grown as he has demonstrated an intent to deploy battlefield atomic weapons along the North’s border with South Korea.
Formally known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), North Korea has been under United Nations sanctions for its ballistic missile and nuclear programmes since 2006.
