July 23, 2024 - Events in August include the Paralympic Games, the launch of China’s G60 Starlink mega constellation, and to pullout of American troops from Niger. Italy will celebrate the works of composer Gioachino Rossini, and Indonesia will inaugurate Nusantara -- its new capital city on the island of Borneo.

Aug, Niger: U.S. troops will completely withdraw from a critical drone base in the West African country ahead of a Sep 15 deadline set by the country’s military rulers. They scrapped a cooperation deal with Washington in March after seizing power in a Jul 2023 coup.

Aug 1, Albania: Two Italian migrant detention centres will open north of the capital Tirana, as part of a controversial deal signed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni with Albania to curb migration to Italy

Aug 5, China: The first of over 12,000 satellites from China’s G60 Starlink mega constellation will launch on a Long March 6A rocket. The venture aims to provide global internet access, challenging U.S. projects like SpaceX’s Starlink.

Aug 7-23, Italy: The Rossini Opera Festival will stage five of the Italian composer Gioachino Rossini’s works in Pesaro, his birthplace, which was designated Italy’s Capital of Culture in 2024.

Aug 17, Indonesia: Nusantara, the country’s new capital city on the island of Borneo, will be inaugurated on Independence Day. The $32 billion project will ease the burden on traffic-ridden, polluted Jakarta.

Aug 19-22, U.S.: Democrats will nominate Vice President Kamala Harris at their National Convention in Chicago as their presidential candidate to take on Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.

Aug 28-Sep 8, France: Paris will host the Paralympic Games for the first time. As many as 4,400 athletes will compete in 22 sports across various iconic venues in the city. The event has led to a significant overhaul of the accessibility of the transport infrastructure.

Aug 28- Sep 7, Italy: Among the world premieres at the Venice International Film Festival is legend Errol Morris’ documentary, Separated, about the separation of parents and children on the Mexico-U.S. border by the Donald Trump administration. The film couldn’t be more timely when Trump is promising mass deportations if reelected president. Peter Weir and Sigourney Weaver will receive Lifetime Achievement awards.
