July 1, 1999: Scotland’s first parliament for 292 years opened in Edinburgh, devolved from the UK government to give the Scottish people greater control over their own affairs

July 2, 1937: Aviator Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, vanished over the Pacific Ocean as they tried to make the first flight around the world at the equator

July 3, 2004: Tennis player Maria Sharapova, aged 17, beat defending champion Serena Williams to become the first Russian woman to win the Wimbledon singles title

July 4, 1924: Chef Caesar Cardini, running out of food for his customers, created a salad from odds and ends that remained. Caesar salad was an instant hit

July 5, 1946: The bikini, designed by former Renault engineer Louis Reard and named after the Pacific atoll where atom bombs were then being tested, was first modelled in Paris
