Parties vying for power in South Africa’s election

By Jordi Bou

May 29, 2024 - The ruling African National Congress may lose its parliamentary majority for the first time since Nelson Mandela swept to power after the end of apartheid 30 years ago.

Considered the party that liberated South Africa from apartheid, the ANC has recently been shedding support, with polls predicting it could fall below 50 percent vote share for the first time.

Stubbornly high unemployment, which hit 32% last year, persistent economic inequalities, corruption allegations and frequent power cuts have reduced its popularity.

If it fails to win a majority, opposition parties could pool together to dethrone the ANC.

Parties vying for power include the main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA), the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) – the third largest party in parliament – and the the newly formed party boosted by the endorsement of former president Jacob Zuma.
